A Christian Response is “No” On Proposition 8.

Gale Tompkins-Bischel (a Christian) makes a great argument a “Yes” on Prop 8 was not a valid “Christian” response. Read her original letter here.

This was my reply:

What a beautifully eloquent letter! Thanks for voicing your views!

It’s understandable why many people live in fear today with so much threatening our view of reality. Our first (human) approach is to fall back on the laws, rules, and regulations of our faith for support.

This is precisely NOT the path to God.

We are asked to look beyond the visible – to trust in Love:

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:7-8

And, what is Love? The fruit of the Spirit is a pretty good guidepost:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23.

Of course, a few verses earlier in Galatians, Paul speaks about “sexual immorality” as being an obviously sinful act. However, one could effectively argue same-sex couples exhibiting spiritual fruits in their relationship are NOT breaking any law, even according to Paul.

In fact, one could argue that loveless heterosexual sex performed within the bonds of marriage is sinful!

If you still want to stick to rules and laws, why not stick to the ones that matter? Here’s what Jesus said when asked about which were the greatest commandments:

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40)

As far as Jesus is concerned, you can throw away the rest of the Torah (or, in our case, the Bible). These verses point to the core of Jesus’ teachings (and to the core of the teachings of most other religions, too!)

We (Christian, Buddhist, Jew, and Muslim alike) must return to this, the Golden Rule of Love. It’s the only way can know God and reach our heavenly reward.

On an Earthly level, the Golden Rule is also the only way we can successfully address not only this issue of marriage equality, but also all the world challenges of today.
